39 convection currents lab worksheet

Convection Currents Lab Convection is the movement of heat in a liquid or a gas. Convection is a process that we talk about a lot in Earth Science. Convection within the mantle of the Earth is responsible for the movement of tectonic plates. Convection also takes place in our atmosphere and is responsible for cloud formation and weather patterns.

Students will be working in pairs to better understand convection currents. In this station, students will be observing and making observations of the similarities and differences of convection currents. Students will follow the steps and record their observations on their lab sheet. WATCH IT!

Convection currents are currents created when there are differences in temperature and density. (Emphasize: Warmer liquids and gasses are less dense and therefore float (or rise) when in cooler liquids and gasses.) ) As this warmer gas (or liquid) rises, cooler gas (or liquid) moves to take its place where it is heated.

6. Explain that air moved our convection detector in step 3. 7. Have students predict what will happen when a heat source is placed under a container of water. Chart. 8. Divide students into small groups to conduct the "Convection Currents" lab. Distribute materials to each group including student handout. Guide students to

cause convenction currents. Analysis Questions 1 and 2 are intended to help guide students’ understanding of convection cur-rents. Ask students to share their responses, and discuss how the differences in water temperature resulted in the formation of a convection current. Explain that convection currents require a source of heat.

The Convection Currents Station Lab takes students through eight student-led science stations, each with a different learning style. Observing Convection Currents 1. Look at the materials for the activity. The jar contains a special fluid (r heoscopic fluid) that is a flow indicator. Before you begin your investigation, review the Safety Tips below. 2. Shake the rheoscopic fluid so you can better observe its flow. Set up your equipment as shown in the picture. Light the ...

formats are used for these worksheets: readings to analyze; problems to solve; diagrams to examine and analyze; or a simple activity or lab which students can complete in the classroom or at home. The key to success in this lab is organization. We are creating a model of convection currents by observing how warm and cold water interact in a closed system. The students must have a clear understanding of where and when to obtain the water samples so they have the best possible opportunity to observe the interactions.

Convection currents in the atmosphere affect our weather. The rising of warm air and falling of dense cool air causes our winds. When warm, moist air rises and mixes with cold air, the atmosphere becomes unstable. This causes thunderstorms. The Gulf Stream off the eastern coast of the States is a convection current.

Invisible convection currents are revealed using a very colorful demonstration. Cool, crisp, clean mountain air has long been an important reason why people move to Colorado, USA. Unfortunately, the air in the city of Denver isn't quite as clean as it has been. By the 1970s, pollution over the city had a name—the "brown cloud.".

Convection currents are movements of a liquid that occurs when there are differences in temperature and density. Continental drift is part of the theory of plate tectonics, which describes the movement of the Earth's crust on a river of molten rock. Each continent, like North America or Australia, has its own tectonic plate. Geologists believe ...
